In the Indian legal system, a citation is a unique identifier assigned to a published judgment. A standard citation includes the year of the judgment, the volume number of the reporter, the abbreviation of the reporter (like SCC, AIR, SCR), and the page number where the judgment begins.

For example, in Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala, (1973) 4 SCC 225:

• 1973 represents the year of the judgment.
• 4 is the volume number of the reporter for that year.
• SCC stands for Supreme Court Cases, the most widely cited reporter in India.
• 225 is the exact page number where the judgment begins.
